Significant Bike Rides

In March 2010, John rode his Kwaka' south from Broome to the Albany Ulyssess AGM on the WA south coast. John completed approx 6,000km in 12 days, and that included 3 days in Albany and 3 days in Perth, so not a bad effort! Some photos of this will be found here.

In May 2010 John started off on his Kwaka' with the Broome Motorcycle Enthusiast's ride from Broome to Darwin. However, a first night in Fitzroy Crossing filled with rain and mosquitoes, plus a continuing bad forecast for the remainder of the ride put John off - the wuss returned to Broome only completing 800km of the proposed 3,600km round trip to Darwin.

In May 2012 John, Simon, Ted and Loi undertook a 10 days bike tour of northern Vietnam (using Honda 250cc dirt bikes) and Halong Bay - click here for that story (or click here for some photos). What fantastic bike roads there are up in the mountains (near Ha Giang) and wonderful friendly people. NB: Wide Eyed Tours are heartily recommended.

February 2013 and time for another overseas bike tour - this time off to northern Thailand with Thai Motorcycle Tours on their Mae Hong Son Loop tour. A wonderful, high speed trip on Kawasaki ER6N's up near the Myanmar boarder. Click here for some Photos.

July 2014 and a short tour of Northern Ireland (in the rain!) on a pair of rented Harley Davidson's for John (Electra Glide) and Son Andrew (Road King). Photos here.

January 2015 saw Loi, Bob, Simon & John off on a great motorbike tour of Cambodia. Click here for the report, and here for more photos.

In February 2016 John tried something new - friends and family unable to go on a bike tour so John joined a 15-day commercial tour of South India with Classic Bike Adventure India. The itinerary was from Goa to Cochin and may be viewed here, photos of the trip will be found here. There is also a short video of riding in the Cardamon Mountains here.

January 2015 saw Loi, Bob, Simon & John ofon a great motorbike tour of Cambodia. This was on cruisers (Honda Phantom 250's) which were quite painful with two days of dirt! Click here for the report, and here for more photos.

July 2016 saw John on a ride from London to Northern Ireland via Shopshire on a Honda ST1100. This was a lovely ride, but marred by 80% wet days! Photos here

In January of 2017 John and Simon went off to do another Northern Thailand motorcycle tour. This was a different route to previously (The Golden Triangle Loop), very much high speed open, smooth, roads. Simon reckons his best riding ever! Click here for photos.

A bit of a gap due family circumstances and Covid-19, but fast track to April 2023 and the next overseas tour, again, to Thailand with a third different route - The Sukhothai Loop. This time Loi and Bob joined John and Simon with 3 other friends. Photos are here.

Memorable Bikes & Rides

  • In November 2009, John rode his newly purchased 2003 Kawasaki 1000GTR home from Brisbane to Broome - 4,800km in 7 days - click for story here and photos here.

April 2010 Ulysses Albany AGM: a lovely ride for John south to Perth on his GTR, and then onwards to Alany in company with Simon on his ZZR. Click here for photos.

2011 Ulysses Exmouth Rally here - a 2,900km trip over 5 days (with 2 nights in Exmouth).

In August 2011 John purchased a 2010 Harley Davidson XL883C Custom in Darwin (whilst John was in Hospital there!). Still awaiting it's first big run, but heaps of fun none the less :)

April 2013 and time for the Fraser Coast (Maryborough) Ulysses AGM. This time flying to Brisbane to pick up a hire Yamaha XV1100S. Pity the charging circuit was playing up! Click here for photos.

March 2015 and time for the Wodonga Ulysses AGM. Flight to Sydney (via Perth) to pick up a hire BMW RT1200. Down to 2C on the morning of the Grand Parade, and the heated grips AND seat were mightily appreciated! Click here for photos.

On a lighter note, in March 2015 John's friend Ralph gave him a Go-Pro type unit on the understanding that he used it occasionally for some BME (Broome Motorcycle Enthusiasts) activities. So, a couple of short movies: 1) a simple Spyder ride around Broome town, and 2) the start of a BME Sunday Breakfast Ride (to Roebuck Plains Roadhouse).
